Blue Cross names chief medical officer

Dr. David Carmouche has been named senior vice president and chief medical officer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana.

He spent 15 years in internal medicine practice at the Baton Rouge Clinic.

As a board-certified clinical lipidologist, he directed the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and the Vascular Laboratory. He also directed a cardiovascular disease prevention program for women at the Woman’s Hospital Wellness Center.

Carmouche’s responsibilities at Blue Cross will include leading efforts to promote health and wellness, effectively manage chronic diseases, promote clinical quality and assist in the transformation of the health-care delivery system and its payment structure, the company said.

“Dr. Carmouche focuses on exactly the types of problems that plague our state and our members,” Mike Reitz, Blue Cross president and CEO, said in a news release. “His message of preventing chronic illness through healthy lifestyle choices, including eating right, maintaining an ideal body weight, exercising and not smoking, are perfectly aligned with where we want to focus.”
