Cultural group sets grant webinars
The Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation has scheduled three webinars over the next several days to help businesses, nonprofits and individuals with the application process for grants from its 2012 Economic Opportunity Fund.
The grant program provides funding to stimulate the state’s cultural economy, a somewhat general economic sector that includes food, art, design and other creative ventures. Maximum grant awards are $2,500.
Application review webinars are scheduled for businesses at 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday; nonprofits at 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday; and individuals 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Registration is available at http://www.culturaleconomy.org. The webinars will be recorded and available to view at the website.
The grant application deadline is 5 p.m. Aug. 31. Grant recipients will be announced by Nov. 1.
Pennington working with obesity project
Pennington Biomedical Research Center will work with a Boston startup on a project that could, if funded, help prevent and reduce obesity among teens in low-income neighborhoods.
The “Help Fight Teen Obesity” project, launched by Bon’App on Indiegogo, will put smartphones preloaded with the app in the hands of children who could not otherwise afford the devices, according to the startup.
The app will allow children to find out easily what’s in their food in a language they understand, according to Bon’App. The app is text- or voice-powered so youngsters can say the name of a pizza chain and their phones will instantly show the calories, bad fat, sugar and salt in every slice of pizza at the restaurant.
Pennington and Boston Children’s Hospital will work with Bon’App to create customized health messages that will be sent to the teens to help guide them toward healthier choices.
Laurent Adamowicz, Bon’App founder and chief executive officer, said the company is seeking donations from the public because the firm couldn’t get government grants to fund the project.
