Zachary economic developer leaving
Chip Mills, the executive director for economic development for the Zachary Chamber of Commerce, is resigning in April and relocating to Austin, Texas. “Unforeseen opportunities have arisen. This was a very tough decision for us, but after much thought and prayer, we feel it is the best move for our family,” Mills said in a statement Wednesday.
Mills has been in the position since it was created in November 2010 through a cooperative endeavor agreement between the city of Zachary and the Zachary Chamber of Commerce. His efforts are overseen by an Economic Development Council, which is composed of Zachary city councilmen and chamber board members.
“Under Chip’s leadership and direction economic development and the chamber have progressed nicely over the last year and a half. Everything he’s put into place will continue to help Zachary reach the goals set for the community,” said Randy Olson, chairman of the Economic Development Council and chief executive officer of Lane Regional Medical Center.
“Zachary is an easy sell, and I believe the North Capital Region has assets that can compete with any region in the nation,” Mills said.
“The Tuscaloosa Shale exploration has spurred significant interest and investment, Georgia Pacific is expanding, Lane RMC is winning awards, Americana is about to break ground and our schools continue to shine.”
Some of the economic development work over the past 18 months includes recruitment and facilitation of more than 15 new prospects and expanding businesses in Zachary.
The chamber said it also assisted in the creation and implementation of Zachary’s first Economic Development Strategic Plan, Leadership Program, Arts Council and Artist’s Guild.
