Republican candidates Dave Freneaux and Junior Shelton are vying for the mayoral position. Central Mayor Shelton “Mac” Watts, the city’s mayor since the city was incorporated in 2005, has decided not to seek re-election. The election is April 5. Each candidate will field eight questions at the debate, which will be moderated by former WAFB-TV reporter Phil Rainier. Leaders award luncheon The Feliciana American African Association is holding its Outstanding Community Leaders Award Luncheon at 11 a.m. Saturday. The keynote speaker is Stella Edwards, of the National Parent Teacher Association. The leaders who will be saluted at this year’s ceremony are: Clinton Mayor Lori Ann Bell, East Feliciana Parish Police Juror Jason McCray, East Feliciana Parish School Board President Michael Bradford, West Feliciana High School Assistant Principal Lee S. Coleman and West Feliciana Parish Hospital nurse Linda Nixon. Also, West Feliciana Parish government Finance Director Sherrel Johnson; the Rev. George Veals, of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in East Feliciana; and Lea Williams, owner of the Mane Attraction Salon in St. Francisville. Lane honored for fitness Lane Regional Medical Center was recently recognized as a Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly Company by the American Heart Association’s initiative for promoting physical activity and health in the workplace. 2014 scholarship available The Republican Women of Central want to award a college scholarship to a local resident. The first scholarship will be awarded in May. The amount of the scholarship awarded will change year to year and is funded through donations to the Republican Women of Central. Applicants must be female high school graduates with their primary residence in Central. Applicants can find forms at the group’s offices, 12628 Hooper Road, Suite A. Submissions are due April 4. Baker Citizen of the Year The Baker Inter-Club Council is accepting nominations for the 2013 Baker Citizen of the Year award. To be eligible, individuals must reside within the Baker city limits or in an unincorporated area of East Baton Rouge Parish. Nominees must have provided time and talent in 2013 that improved the quality of life for Baker residents for which the nominee was not paid and the effort did not fall within the scope of job duties.
