Two more arrested in West Feliciana tablet computer thefts

Authorities on Tuesday accounted for one more of the 80 tablet computers stolen in a June 26 school burglary, bringing the recovery total to 41, a West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

Lt. Col. Archer Lee said two West Feliciana Parish men allegedly tried to sell one of the stolen iPad 2 devices at a Baton Rouge store, but the owner called police.

Booking records show Vontrae Anderson, 20, 5987 Street D, and John Washington, 10775 Shady Grove Road, both of St. Francisville, were booked at East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Tuesday night on one count each of possession of stolen property.

Lee said the two had been arrested earlier by Wilkinson County, Miss., sheriff’s deputies and booked with possession of three iPad computers and one laptop computer.

West Feliciana Parish deputies earlier arrested two 17-year-old boys and three juveniles for allegedly burglarizing the school.

Jerome Matherne, technical services supervisor for the West Feliciana school system, said the district paid $380 for each iPad, or more than $30,000 for 80.

The West Feliciana school system gives each middle school student an iPad to use at home and in the classroom, and the program is being expanded into high school subject areas.
