The West Feliciana Animal Humane Society will celebrate its first year of operations with a “Take a Chance on Me” anniversary gala from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 27 at Grace Episcopal Church’s Jackson Hall, 11621 Ferdinand St., St. Francisville.

The public is invited to enjoy food and beverages, a wine bar, live music by the Delta Drifters, a fashion show and a silent auction.

Tickets are $25 per person, with all proceeds benefitting the James L. “Bo” Bryant Animal Shelter, which the society supports.

Advance tickets for out-of-town supporters may be purchased by mailing a check to WFAHS, P.O. Box 2032, St. Francisville, LA 70775. Tickets bought by mail will be held for pickup at the event.

Hunter education

Baker Mayor Harold Rideau and Alan Howland will teach a hunter’s education safety class from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 9 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at the J.E.B. Stuart Veterans of Foreign Wars hall, 3215 Ben Williams Lane, Baker.

The class includes eight hours of classroom work and two hours at a shooting range.

The free class is open to anyone 16 or older. Anyone born after 1969 must have a hunter education certification card to obtain a Louisiana hunting license.

Tourism promoters

Faye Hoffman Talbot, of Jackson, will represent East Feliciana Parish when the Southeast Louisiana Gumbo Express travels by Amtrak to functions in Birmingham, Ala.; Atlanta.; and Washington, D.C., to treat guests to Louisiana food and music.

“Swamp People” regular Bruce Mitchell will travel with the group to promote the area.

Dueling dulcimers

Musicians with the Lagniappe Dulcimer Society will play a repertoire of tunes from 19th-century American, Irish, Cajun and old-time melodies at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Zachary Branch Library, 1900 Church St.

The audience also will learn the history of the dulcimer as well as some background on the songs.

Back-to-school event

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Zachary Committee’s annual Back-to-School Supply Give-Away and Health Fair will be from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Zachary High School gymnasium, 4100 Bronco Lane.

The event includes fingerprinting, making children’s identification badges, refreshments, fire safety talks, door prizes and school supplies given to students.

Parents or guardians are asked to be present with the children.

Auction planned

Faith Baptist Church, 15880 Plank Road, Baker, will have a public auction starting at 5 p.m. Saturday with sale items, including a piano, LSU items, a soft-drink vending machine, gift certificates and more.

The church’s youth group will sell refreshments.
