ST. FRANCISVILLE — West Feliciana Parish sheriff’s detectives are continuing an investigation into the severe beating of a 2-year-old boy that has resulted in two arrests, Sheriff J. Austin Daniel said Friday.
Deputies booked Brandon Cobb, 26, 10637 Tunica Trace, with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and domestic abuse battery during the investigation of the Sunday beating, Daniel said.
Deputies also booked Dana Vessell, 30, Cobb’s girlfriend and the boy’s mother, with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.
Daniel said Cobb’s bail was set at $85,000, but he also has a probation hold because of an earlier domestic abuse conviction. In all, Cobb now has been booked four times with domestic abuse battery, the sheriff said.
Vessell’s bail was set at $75,000.
The sheriff said the beating occurred Sunday at the home of John Cobb, a former West Feliciana Parish police juror.
Brandon Cobb also is accused of striking Vessell while he was beating the boy, Daniel said.
Vessell did not report the beating to sheriff’s deputies or take the child to the hospital, Daniel said.
“This child was beaten badly,” Daniel said.
The baby’s grandmother learned of the incident Monday and took the child to the hospital. En route, she called sheriff’s deputies, Daniel said. Brandon Cobb and Vessell were booked Monday.
The child, who was treated for his injuries in the intensive care unit of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, will be given to the custody of state child protection authorities when he is released from the hospital, Daniel said.
John Cobb, the former juror, was placed on probation and fined earlier this month for three counts of felony theft stemming from a scheme to divert funds from a defunct nonprofit organization. His wife, Carol, faces trial in July.
John Cobb said he and his wife were attending another son’s college graduation ceremony in Maryland during the weekend. Cobb said Vessell does not live at the Cobb residence.
