The competition will begin at 9 a.m. at the West Feliciana Parish Fire Protection District 1 training center, 9892 West Feliciana Parkway. Baker’s birthday The city of Baker will celebrate its 125th birthday with a big tailgating party, starting at 5 p.m. May 3. Residents are invited to bring lawn chairs and snacks to the park next to the Baker Municipal Building for fun and fellowship, music and dancing, a car show, old-fashioned games and activities for children. Talented kids The Zachary Community School District Talented Arts Program will present “Arts Alive 2013: A Talented Theatre and Visual Arts Showcase” Friday in the Zachary High School Visual and Performing Arts Center. The event will feature work created by talented theatre and art students in grades 1-12. The visual art gallery will open at 6 p.m., and seating for theatre performances will begin at 6:45 p.m. with a curtain time of 7 p.m. No tickets or reservations are necessary. Lunch and learn Dr. Thomas Kang of Lane Surgery Group will discuss “How to Lose Weight: A Surgeon’s Perspective,” including the benefits and limitations of weight loss surgery, during the free “Ask the Doctor” Lunch and Learn program from noon until 1 p.m. May 2 in the Staff Development Classroom at Lane Regional Medical Center in Zachary. Storm class National Weather Service meteorologists will hold a SkyWarn storm spotter class for anyone interested in being the eyes and ears for the weather and emergency services. Friends of Oakley Danny Heitman, author of “The Summer of Birds,” will be the guest speaker for the Friends of Oakley annual meeting and membership drive at 2 p.m. Sunday at Audubon State Historic Site. Scrapbooking class Artist Corrie Manieri offers an “Introduction to Scrapbooking” class from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Arts for All Studio on Commerce Street in St. Francisville. The cost is $15. Manieri will furnish most supplies, but participants are asked to bring a nontoxic glue stick, a paper cutter (optional), and photos if they wish to put them in their scrapbooks.
