FRANCISVILLE — A state district judge sentenced a former Louisiana State Penitentiary security captain Thursday to three years in prison on a felony conviction of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Twentieth Judicial District Judge William G. Carmichael sentenced Mark Sharp, 31, to a five-year prison term at hard labor but suspended two years of the sentence and placed him on probation for five years. The probationary period includes several conditions, including that Sharp register as a sex offender and pay up to $24,162 in uninsured medical expenses incurred by the victim’s family. West Feliciana Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested Sharp in January 2011. The investigation began after a 15-year-old girl who lived in the Angola employee housing area unexpectedly gave birth, Sheriff J. Austin Daniel said. Sharp pleaded no contest to the charge on March 18. Editor’s note: This story was modified on April 5, 2013, to correct the name of the former officer who was sentenced. He was Mark Sharp. The Advocate regrets the error.
