Angola inmate strikes guard with metal pan

An inmate at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola attacked a female correctional officer Monday evening with a metal serving pan, prison authorities said.

Warner Wiley hit the officer in the face and head with the metal pan around 5 p.m., according to a news release from the state Department of Corrections.

The officer has been taken to a hospital for treatment, the release says.

Angola Warden Burl Cain said investigators have not yet determined what caused the attack.

“We don’t have a clue what provoked it,” Cain said.

Another inmate helped save the officer’s life by getting the attention of other officers during the attack, Cain said.

“Had he (the inmate) not, there’s no telling what would have happened to her,” Cain said.

Wiley has been at Angola since 1986 and is serving a life sentence for a first-degree murder conviction in Franklin Parish, the release says. He was assigned as a janitor and was housed in the main prison.

Angola’s Investigative Department and the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.

@twinkie 1. Louisiana has plenty of problems much worse than the way our prison system is run. 2. What DO you think warrants a sentence of 20+ years? 3. No hope? Can't inmates get GEDs and even college credit/degrees from prison at no cost? That's a free shot at a better future when you get out for whatever idiotic thing you did that landed you in there in the first place. No hope?.....They're given more chances from inside that cement box they're in than most people on the outside.

ok twinkie1cat. seeing how lengthy prison sentences bother you, i'll compromise. any sentence longer than 20 years goes to execution immediately. now they dont have time to get mad.

Hope? Neither do the victims.

If I had been locked up since 1986, I would have wanted to hit somebody too. The problem with Louisiana is that the prisoners have no hope. Very few inmates should be locked up for more than 20 years.

and what is his punishment going to be? after all he is already serving a life sentence for 1ST DEGREE MURDER. they'll put him in segregation for some period of time, he'll spend 23 hours a day in his cell without entertainment! oh the horrors! all that until candy cain feels he has been punished enough for his actions, the guard's condition and future implications from the attack he doesn't give a rat's behind about. and cain, who the hell cares why he decided he should attack a guard. pull your head out of your posteria and remember, these folks are not there as GUEST of the state, they are involuntarily housed for society's protection and punishment for their PREVIOUS actions. any new actions should be met with even harsher measures to show the prisoner he MUST behave or he can and will pay a deeper price. we need to bring back flogging.

One might say that the prisoner's nefarious plot did not pan out.
