Jackson battle re-enactment this weekend

Centenary State Historic Site in Jackson presents the sixth annual re-enactment Saturday and Sunday of the 1863 clash between Union troops from New York, Massachusetts and Vermont and Arkansas Confederate troops on the grounds of Centenary College of Louisiana.

More than 800 soldiers were involved in the engagement, the largest of its kind in the town of Jackson.

The event includes artillery and infantry drills in the morning with camp life demonstrations leading up to the battle re-enactments at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is the normal park entrance fee of $4 for people 13 to 61 years of age.

Political forum

The Republican Women of Baker/Zachary is sponsoring a Meet the Candidates Forum at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Fellowship Church, 1555 E. Mount Pleasant Road, Zachary.

The public is invited to meet Republican candidates in the Nov. 6 election, from Congress to mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish.

Following the forum, U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge, and Randy Olsen, the chief executive of Lane Regional Medical Center, will address local health care issues.

Social media marketing

A free “lunch and learn seminar” on social media marketing will be held by the West Feliciana Economic Development Commission from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at West Feliciana Parish Fire District 1 headquarters in Hardwood.

Cemetery association

The Young Family Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting at 3 p.m. Oct. 28 in the historic cemetery in The Plains. In the event of inclement weather, the meeting will be at Plains Presbyterian Church.

Arthritis discussion

Dr. Joseph Nesheiwat will discuss two forms of arthritis during Lane Regional Medical Center’s monthly “Ask the Doctor” lunch-and-learn session at noon Oct. 25 in the hospital’s staff development classroom.

OLLI coffee

Richard Martin, director of forest protection and management for the Nature Conservancy in Louisiana, will discuss the ecoregions in Louisiana at an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute coffee at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, La. 10 and U.S. 61, St. Francisville.

His talk will touch on the West Feliciana projects of Mary Ann Brown Nature Conservancy Preserve, Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge and Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area.

Waterski champions

Bennett’s Water Ski and Wakeboard School near Zachary is hosting the Collegiate National Water Ski Championships from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The school is at 18605 Barnett Road.

Approximately 300 athletes from 22 colleges are expected to compete.
