Friday garden tour scheduled

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site continues its series of “Garden Tour Fridays” with a guided stroll at 10 a.m. Friday. Manager/Horticulturist Patricia Aleshire will provide garden enthusiasts with a detailed look at selected portions of one of the finest early 19th-century gardens.

The tour begins at the site office.

Movie memorabilia

The Louisiana Film Center plans to hold a garage sale at the old Clinton High School building from noon to 6 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. It features memorabilia from movie sets of films completed in the area and donated clothing and housewares. Proceeds go toward the building’s renovation.

Clinton market

The monthly Clinton Community Market, from 8 a.m. until the early afternoon on Saturday, will feature hot barbecue, hot tamales, hot boudin and hot deals. Cool off with icy snow cones and cold lemonade.

Thrift store open

Dorcas Door, the thrift store at 11152 Church St. behind First Baptist Church of Clinton, will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday for a $5 bag sale of clothing and other items.

Church garage sale

Clinton United Methodist Church is having a garage sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to benefit the church’s mission trip to Red Bird Mission in Kentucky next month.

Tax talk

The East Feliciana Parish School Board has a 4:30 p.m. public hearing at the central office Tuesday on the question of whether the board should roll its property taxes back to offset a slight increase in assessments this year or to keep the millages the same as last year. The School Board estimates keeping them the same would amount to an extra $4,800 in revenue for the current fiscal year.

Back-to-school fairs

Two back-to-school events are scheduled in the area this weekend:

  • The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Zachary Committee will have its Back-to-School Supply Give-Away and Health Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of the Zachary Community Center, 5746 Rollins Road, Zachary.

Parents are asked to be present with their children during the event.

  • Several groups will have a back-to-school and family day program at BREC’s Greenwood Community Park on La. 19, Baker, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The event is free and open to the public. The Center of Empowerment organization said it hopes to serve 300 children at the event.

Tombstone markings

Learn about local historical figures during the “The Dead of Locust Grove” program at Locust Grove State Historic Site from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Visitors also may learn a nondestructive way to reproduce gravestone markings, with supplies and instructions provided by the staff of Audubon State Historic Site.

Locust Grove Cemetery is on Bains Road off La. 10 or U.S. 61 northeast of St. Francisville. Admission is free.
