Hummingbird festival this weekend
The Feliciana Nature Society’s annual Feliciana Hummingbird Celebration begins with a 6 p.m. Friday reception at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site, 12501 La. 10, St. Francisville, featuring wine and cheese selections, walks through the Rosedown gardens and a presentation on hummingbirds by Carlyle Rogillio.
The celebration continues from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, with biologists Linda Beall and Nancy Newfield capturing and banding birds at the gardens of Rogillio, 15376 Tunica Trace (La. 66), and Murrell Butler at 9485 Oak Hill Road. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the birds up close, and choose among hummingbird-friendly plants at both locations.
Admission is free. The society’s website, http://www.audubonbirdfest.com, has more information and helpful maps to the banding sites.
Church open
Visitors also will have a rare opportunity to stop by St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and Cemetery during the Hummingbird Festival. Built in 1857, the church is in the Gothic style and served a small plantation community for almost 100 years. Drive to 12790 Tunica Trace in the Weyanoke community, and the church is off the highway on a private lane, Cap Eddie Road. The hours this weekend are 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Big Baby visits
Basketball star Glen “Big Baby” Davis will be at the Baker branch library’s storytime program at 2 p.m. Thursday to read to children.
Artists invited
Area artists are invited to a meeting from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday being held by Arts for All, an umbrella arts organization for West Feliciana Parish, at 5877 Commerce St., St. Francisville. Artists of all levels are encouraged to bring something on which they are working and would like help or would like to share.

Back to school fair
The Chaneyville Community Center, Metro Councilman Trae Welch, Southeast Community Health System, “For Your Eyes Only,” the Office of Social Services and Covenant Community Church have teamed together to provide school supplies for the community children of Chaneyville from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the center, 13211 Jackson Road, Zachary.
Supplies for different grade levels will be available while the stock lasts, and free food, sno-cones, entertainment and door prizes are planned. Dental and health screenings also will be offered.
The end, already?
The Audubon Regional Library will hold end-of-summer bashes this week at the Clinton and Jackson branches. Stories, crafts, cookies and prizes will be awarded to good readers in Jackson from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, while Clinton will celebrate from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday. All summer readers are invited.
Animal shelter open
A ribbon-cutting program for the James L. “Bo” Bryant Animal Shelter is scheduled at 11 a.m. Wednesday on West Feliciana Parkway, St. Francisville. The public is invited to attend.
