Driver of four-wheeler killed in hit-and-run

A Vacherie man who was thrown from a four-wheeler and lying on a highway was run over by a car and killed, State Police said Saturday.

Now State Police are looking for the driver of the car, Master Trooper Greg Marchand said in a news release.

Matthew J. Mahler, 22, Vacherie, was westbound in a drainage ditch that runs along the north side of La. 10, west of Interstate 55, near Kentwood.

Mahler hit a culvert in the ditch, flipped the Cam-Am he was driving and was thrown, landing in the westbound lane of La. 10.

Mahler’s companion, riding another four-wheeler, tried to help as a small, dark-colored sedan approached.

Mahler’s friend tried to alert the driver of the sedan, to no avail. The sedan ran over Mahler, who was taken to St. Helena Parish Hospital where he was pronounced dead, the release says.

Mahler was not wearing an approved helmet and alcohol is suspected. A blood sample was taken from him for tests, which are pending.

The car that hit Mahler could have damage to the lower front bumper and undercarriage, the release says.

Troopers ask that anyone with information call Louisiana State Police Troop L at (985) 893-6250 or their local law enforcement agency.
