Schools to hold series of lockdown drills Schools to hold series of lockdown drills Advocate staff report Oct. 02, 2013 Comments The Ascension Parish School Board, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, Gonzales Police Department and emergency services will participate in simulated emergency drills in schools throughout the district beginning Monday , a school system spokesman said. The periodic lock down drills are planned to continue throughout the school year, spokesman Johnnie Balfantz said in a news release. The goal of the exercises is to ensure the continued safety and well-being of students, faculty and staff throughout the school district, he said. By conducting exercises, the school district will learn from the experiences of simulated emergencies in a school setting and have the chance to improve its system-wide preparedness and response efforts to emergency situations, the release says. No simulated actors or props will be used in the exercises, and the drills will be closely monitored by law enforcement partners, emergency personnel and school officials. Parents, guardians and the community will be notified when the drills are conducted.
