The program, organized by the Ascension Parish Recreation Department, started five years ago with about 50 people at the St. Amant Recreation Center and has grown over the years to fill up the center's gym. Advocate story Sept. 11, 2013 Comments Seniors started lining up at 8:15 a.m. Friday for the monthly Sock Hop, hosted by the Ascension Parish Department of Recreation and Culture. When the doors opened just before noon, more than 400 seniors showed up for a pastalaya lunch and dancing. The event takes two days to set up and is staffed by volunteers. Parish President Tommy Martinez started the program five years ago at the St. Amant Recreation Center. This month’s meal was sponsored by state Sen. Jody Amedee.
