GONZALES — A Gonzales-area man wounded by police gunfire after a high-speed chase in a stolen pizza delivery car Sunday night was released Wednesday from a Baton Rouge hospital and taken to jail in Ascension Parish.
Daniel West, 33, 14390 Whispering Oaks Drive, Gonzales, was booked into Ascension Parish Prison near Donaldsonville on counts of armed robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and aggravated flight from an officer, police said in a news release.
Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office and Gonzales Police Department interviewed West late Wednesday afternoon after his release from Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, police said.
Police Sgt. Gary Ferrari had cornered West in the rear of the Fox Run apartments outside Gonzales city limits after the robbery. West was fleeing from officers after they stopped the stolen delivery car he was driving with a spike strip near the intersection of Churchpoint and Roddy roads.
Ferrari shot West in the neck from his patrol car after West turned and faced Ferrari with a .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol in his hand.
According to a police account, West allegedly robbed a Domino’s Pizza delivery driver at gunpoint, taking $20 and stealing the car shortly after the driver parked at a Domino’s outlet in Gonzales about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Sheriff Jeff Wiley said his office’s investigation of the shooting had determined that Ferrari and the Police Department acted “in full accordance with policies, procedures, and State law.”
Police said Wednesday that West could be booked with additional criminal counts as a result of further investigation into the armed robbery and escape attempt.
Ferrari remains on paid administrative leave pending a separate procedural inquiry into the shooting by the Police Department, police have said.
