Rebekah L. Whitney, of Sorrento, has been awarded a U.S. Army Women’s Foundation scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year.
The U.S. Army Women’s Foundation, headquartered in Fort Lee, Va., recognizes and honors the service of women in the Army and support the Army Women’s Museum at Fort Lee, a news release says.
The Foundation Legacy Scholarship program recognizes the importance of education and helping recipients to achieve their educational goals. The Legacy Scholarship program offers financial support to Army women and their lineal descendants.
Scholarships are based on merit, academic potential, community service, letters of recommendation and need.
Whitney is a 2013 distinguished honor graduate of St. Amant High School. During her four years at St. Amant, she participated in the Beta Club, marching and symphonic bands, Lady Gators soccer team, track and field team and cross country team.
She also has been a member of the Women Veterans of Louisiana for the past three years performing community service for local veterans.
She is the daughter of U.S. Army Retired Master Sgt. Tanya Barnett Whitney and Robert Whitney Jr. of Sorrento.
