New primary school to open Oct. 16

The new G.W. Carver Primary School in Gonzales should be open by mid-October, district officials said.

The new $16 million school, on West Cornerview Road on the site of the old Gonzales Country Club, originally was scheduled to be open in time for the start of the 2013-14 school year. However, excessive winter rain pushed the contractor behind schedule, said Chad Lynch, director of planning and construction for the Ascension Parish School Board.

The new campus will replace the outdated Carver Primary School, which was built in 1956 and is one of the oldest buildings in the school district.

Students will begin the school year at the current Carver campus, at 518 W. Oak St., Gonzales, and are expected to transfer to the new building on Oct. 16 after the school district’s fall break, Lynch said.

Carver is one of several schools in Ascension Parish that is undergoing construction this summer.

Phase one of major renovations at Prairieville Middle School — featuring a new kitchen, cafeteria, power supply and heating and air conditioning infrastructure — is nearing completion and should be ready for the start of school. The second phase, including a new two-story classroom and administrative office building, will continue during the school year until complete.

Gonzales Middle School is receiving a facelift that includes a new front facade, asbestos abatement in eight classrooms, new fencing around the campus and additional exterior parking.

The School Board also recently accepted the bid for the second phase of Gonzales Primary School renovations, which began Tuesday. That phase includes a new parking lot, bus driveway and facade improvements, and should be completed by early November.

Other school projects under construction include:

Central Primary and Spanish Lake Primary left-turn lanes.

Galvez Primary electric upgrades and classroom renovation.

Dutchtown Middle gym conversion into a library.

St. Amant High restroom renovations.
