Christopher L. Richard, 38, was driving recklessly, tailgating a vehicle and “brake-checking” the trooper driving behind him through a one-lane construction zone on La. 1 southbound in Donaldsonville about 6 p.m. Tuesday, officials say. Once past the construction zone, the off-duty trooper, who was headed home in an unmarked State Police sport utility vehicle, pulled alongside Richard’s 2007 Nissan Murano. Richard is accused of holding the pistol in the air and then pointed it at the trooper. Troopers later determined the pistol was, in fact, a pellet gun that is a replica of a Desert Eagle .50-caliber handgun. When faced with a man waving around a realistic-looking pistol at the time, though, the off-duty trooper called for help officials say. Deputies from Ascension and St. James parishes intercepted Richard east of the Sunshine Bridge on La. 70 near La. 3125 in St. James Parish. The sheriffs’ deputies and the off-duty trooper held Richard until an on-duty trooper could arrive to arrest him. Richard was booked into Ascension Parish Prison near Donaldsonville with counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, careless operation and not having insurance, troopers said.
