A package of marijuana mailed to a St. Amant man led to his arrest, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday.

U.S. Postal Inspection Service personnel found the marijuana in a package they opened after becoming suspicious, sheriff’s Chief Deputy Tony Bacala said in a news release.

According to Bacala’s account of the case, federal postal inspectors and Ascension sheriff’s narcotics detectives arranged for a controlled delivery of the package to Gabriel Allen, 30, 13213 Leo Lambert Road, St. Amant.

After Allen accepted the package, detectives took him into custody.

While on the scene, Allen gave narcotics detectives permission to search his residence, and during the search, detectives found marijuana, equipment used to cultivate marijuana and steroids.

Allen was arrested on counts of cultivation of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of a Schedule III controlled dangerous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

After Allen was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail, his bail was set at $25,342.

The news release gave no date for Allen’s arrest and a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman did not respond to a request for that information by late Thursday afternoon.
