St. Theresa Middle School recently named Hannah Poirrier and Tommy Hertel as its Students of the Year.
Hannah, an eighth-grader, excelled throughout her years at St. Theresa Middle, a news release from the school says. She earned various academic and athletic honors, including St. Theresa Middle’s highest award, the STA Award, in seventh-grade. She received the Jeffrey Louviere Award for having the highest grade-point average from first- through eighth-grade and the Eatel Award for the second highest score for Christian service.
She served as secretary to the Beta Club in eighth-grade and was a member of the God’s Warriors Club where she was a student minister in eighth-grade; and a member of the Library Club and Choir.
In sports, Hannah played on the school’s volleyball team and was a cheerleader.
Active in dance classes since 2002, she trained in jazz, tap and pointe. She has been a teacher’s assistant at All About Dance since 2011. She will be putting her dancing skills to good use as a St. Amant High School Gatorettes, the release says.
She is the daughter of Dwight Poirrier and Jill Poirrier and a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant.
Tommy is a fifth-grader who has been consistently on the Principal’s List honor roll, the release says. He earned St. John Primary’s highest award, the SJP Award, in first grade. As a member of the 2012-2013 Robotics Club, Tommy contributed to the Robotics Club becoming Team Grand Champions at both the First Lego League Regional Qualifier competition, held in November, and the 2013 World War II Museum Challenge held in May.
As a member of the Gonzales Tsunami soccer team, he helped his team win the 2011 Indoor State Cup Championship and the 2011 Midnight Madness Championship. He is a member of the Pelican Point Swim Team and was also involved in the Gonzales City Baseball league.
Tommy earned badges and was involved in service projects as a member of the St. Theresa of Avila Church Cub Scouts.
The son of David and Jennifer Hertel, Tommy is a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant.
