Summer programs begin in Ascension Summer programs begin in Ascension Advocate staff report June 15, 2013 Comments Beneath the Surface is the theme for the Ascension Parish Library’s teen summer reading program. Teens can celebrate the program’s theme with a Calaveras painting class at 4 p.m. Thursday at the library’s Dutchtown branch. Calaveras, Spanish for skulls, are traditionally associated with Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebrations. The library will provide the paint, canvas and a general outline of a skull. The summer teen programs also include a chance for teens to perform at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Donaldsonville branch. The Open Mike Night is open to all teens who want to perform for up to 10 minutes. Teens earn prizes for reading and attending summer programs. All teen programs for free and open to youths in sixth - through 12th-grade.
