McCormick May 23, 2013 Comments ConnecTeens registration Teens interested in a summer volunteering opportunity can sign up Tuesday at the Ascension Parish Library in Donaldsonville for Volunteer Ascension’s ConnecTeens program. Registration is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The program introduces youths 12 to 17 to volunteerism, while guaranteeing they meet new people, learn new things and gain a better understanding of the important role of volunteerism in the community, the agency’s website says. Free cancer screenings Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and St. Elizabeth Hospital are partnering to offer a free skin cancer screening at 6 p.m. May 30 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Medical Plaza II, 1014 W. St. Clare Blvd., Suite 1040, Gonzales. The screening is for men and women 18 and older who do not have insurance and have not been screened for skin cancer by a physician in the past 12 months. Cultural exchange set The Gonzales Committee on Cultural Affairs is finalizing plans to welcome a delegation from Meylan, France, Oct. 10-17. Committee President Karen Hatcher said the group is part of a twin cities program that travels to Meylan every other year and hosts the French visitors in between trips. Members of the French delegation will stay in area homes while visiting the area. The group plans a dance in Jambalaya Park, trip to a Lafayette festival, day on the river with the Gonzales Boat club, tour of a sugar mill and plantation home and tailgate party in conjunction with the LSU vs. Florida football game.
