Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley reported the arrest of Darryl “Hoops” Jones in a news release on Thursday. Ascension sheriff’s deputies had been seeking Jones, 41, 9429 Avis St., Baton Rouge, for about two weeks. Jones, arrested Thursday morning by U.S. Marshals in Baton Rouge, was booked afterward into the Ascension Parish Jail on one count of being a principal to second-degree murder. Wilkins, 41, was found shot to death on the side of LV Road in Sorrento on Jan. 12, where authorities believe he was slain between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Cecil “Unc” Beals, 53, who shares the Avis Street address in Baton Rouge with Jones, was booked on one count of second-degree murder on Jan. 18, while Calvin K. “Dirt” Williams, 37, 8539 Longwood View Ave., Baton Rouge, was booked on one count of second-degree murder on Jan. 27. Investigators said that after Jones, Beals and Williams drove from Baton Rouge to Sorrento, Beals and Williams shot Wilkins on LV Road. Investigators haven’t said what they believe Jones’ role was in the shooting. Wiley said that the men were involved “in the illegal drug trade,” though authorities haven’t released a motive behind the shooting.
