Bishop Robert Muench will be the main celebrant accompanied by several priests from the diocese. Representatives from each school in the diocese will attend and participate in an effort to supply Catholic Charities with needed supplies. Gonzales school plans open houses Ascension Christian High School has set two open houses at the Gonzales school. Students and parents can learn more about the eighth- through 12th-grade school, at 14408 E. A. Academy Road, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and at the same times on Feb. 18. Soccer league registration begins Registration is under way for Upward Soccer 2013 at The Rock Church, 42080 Churchpoint Road, Gonzales. Boys and girls in kindergarten through sixth grade can register through Feb. 10 for the program. The fee is $80 per child. Library to present film on civil rights The Ascension Parish Library is planning a viewing of “Taking a Seat for Justice: The 1960 Baton Rouge Sit-Ins” at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at its Dutchtown branch. The 60-minute film documents the historic actions of 16 former Southern University students that prompted one of the U.S. Supreme Court’s first decisions on sit-ins in protest of racial discrimination, a news release from the library states. The video was written and produced by Rachel Emanuel and includes audio recordings, video footage and interviews with the sit-in participants and Felton G. Clark, the president of Southern University from 1938-1969. Emanuel is the director of Communications and Development Support at the Southern University Law Center. Call (225) 673-8699. Council on Aging to continue series The Ascension Parish Council on Aging and Gonzales Senior Center continue the popular “Ask The Doctor” series this month featuring St. Elizabeth Physician Dr. Bernard Brach. Brach will talk about pulmonary disease at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Gonzales Senior Center, 526 South Irma Blvd. Cystic fibrosis fundraiser slated It’s not too late to register for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Great Strides: A Walk to Cure Cystic Fibrosis Feb. 16 in Jambalaya Park. The event raises money to help find a cure for cystic fibrosis, a genetic, life-threatening respiratory and digestive disease, local walk chairwoman Cathy Waggenspack-Landry said.
