Deputies also arrested three adults who were in the trailer at the time of the shooting, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Deputies summoned to 14269 Oak Meadow St. in Prairieville learned that Christian Crain had been fatally wounded by a gunshot to the head while playing with a .38 special revolver in a bedroom with two other teenagers — an unnamed 14-year-old boy and Devin Himel, 18. Deputies learned the pistol had been stolen from a vehicle in a nearby neighborhood a few days before the shooting, the release says. Deputies have not determined who stole the gun or how it got into the boys’ possession. The 14-year-old confessed to shooting Crain accidentally and disposing of the gun in the back yard of the Oak Meadow Street mobile home, the release says. “What happened in that house was an accident. They gave my son a gun and he didn’t know what he was doing and he killed his best friend,” Jessica Bills, mother of the alleged shooter, said Saturday. Bills refused to comment further. The 14-year-old also admitted he smoked marijuana prior to the shooting, the release says. Deputies found marijuana in the room where Christian’s body was discovered, the release says. Denise Webb, who lives down the street from where the shooting occurred, said she had seen Christian riding his bike up and down the street numerous times and described him as a “sports fanatic who loved video games” and “beautiful inside and out.” Webb added that she was not surprised a shooting happened at that address, but was surprised that a child was the one who was shot. The 14-year-old was booked into the St. James Parish Youth Detention Center on counts of negligent homicide, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of marijuana and possession of a handgun by a minor, the release says. Devin Himel, Judy Himel, 44, and Danielle Gaudin, 25, all of 14269 Oak Meadow St., were booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on one count each of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to the news release. Sheriff’s Lt. Col. Bobby Webre said other criminal counts may be pending against Devin Himel, but that it is unlikely Judy Himel and Gaudin would face prosecution on additional counts.
