to take oath of office
Assessor M.J. “Mert” Smiley will take the oath of office during a Wednesday ceremony at the Ascension Parish Courthouse East Annex.
Smiley, who last year defeated Assessor Renee Mire Michel, will be sworn in at 11 a.m. during a ceremony in the Parish Council chambers of the second floor of the building at 828 S. Irma Blvd.
‘Ask the Doctor’ series continues
The Ascension Parish Council on Aging and the Gonzales Senior Center continue the “Ask the Doctor” series on Jan. 9 with a presentation by St. Elizabeth Physician otolaryngologist Dr. Michael Goodier.
Goodier will discuss the different types of hearing loss, their causes, treatment and how it may be possible to prevent hearing loss for some people, a news release from the COA stated.
The 11 a.m. presentation will held at the Gonzales Senior Center, 526 South Irma Blvd.
Goodier received his doctor of medicine degree at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport and completed his residency program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center-Department of Otolaryngology & Communicative Sciences, the release states.
Residents age 60 and older can have lunch for a $1.10 donation.

New Orleans battle topic of discussion
Chuck Perrodin will discuss the Battle of New Orleans during a Jan. 10 program at the Ascension Parish Library in Donaldsonville
On Jan. 8, 1915, American forces led by General Andrew Jackson defeated invading British troops intent on seizing the vast territory the United States had acquired via the Louisiana Purchase. The Battle of New Orleans is widely regarded as the most important land victory of the War of 1812.
Perrodin’s “The Battle of New Orleans: How it Changed the Course of History” presentation will detail how this epic clash affected the future of both the country and the rest of the world, a library news release states.
The program starts at 6 p.m., and advance registration is required.

Counseling offered for new businesses
Ascension Parish Library and SCORE — Baton Rouge offer free, on-site counseling in Ascension Parish for new business startups and mentoring for existing businesses.
Counseling sessions are held the first Tuesday morning and third Tuesday afternoon each month by appointment at the library in Gonzales.
SCORE, a nonprofit association and a resource partner of the Small Business Administration, is dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide, a library news release states.
