Armed forces veterans will be honored Sunday at several events planned in and around Veterans Memorial Park in Gonzales.
The daylong celebration will start at 11 a.m. with a Veterans Day program in the park’s amphitheater, followed by a parade at 2 p.m., a classic car show, a children’s tent and children’s parade, a news release from the Parish President’s Office states.
The parade starts at the Veterans Memorial Park on Irma Boulevard, travels along Worthey Road to Burnside Avenue then turns onto Cornerview Road. The parade ends in the park.
Grand marshals will be World War II veteran Pershing Mire and Afghanistan war veteran Jeffrey Argrave. Former Gov. Edwin Edwards, a World War II veteran, is also expected to ride in the parade.
Veterans will be on hand in the park after the parade to answer questions and visit.
A small children’s parade will include decorated bicycles, wagons and strollers.
“We’re asking families to come out with picnic baskets and enjoy the day honoring veterans,” committee member Missy Jandura said.
The Jambalaya Festival Association will be serving jambalaya at the park after the morning program.
A candlelight service will be held at 7 p.m. in the park.
