Damon M. Thomas, 35, died Monday after he lost control of his vehicle on La. 73 near Geismar, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Lt. Col. Bobby Webre said. The investigation revealed that Thomas was traveling at a high rate of speed and veered off the roadway. He was not wearing a seat belt when the vehicle went airborne, struck a tree and landed in New River Canal, Webre said. Thomas was ejected from the vehicle and died. Alcohol may have been a factor in the accident, and toxicology test results are pending, he said.
