Cancer awareness event Sunday

The Community Sisterhood is holding its 10th annual Cancer Awareness program at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Geismar Community Center, 12060 La. 73 in Geismar.

The event will feature a balloon launch to honor those who are fighting cancer.

Republican Women to host roundtable

Area candidates, a tax proposition and constitutional amendments on the Nov. 6 ballot will be the focus of the Ascension GOP Roundtable sponsored by Ascension Republican Women.

The Roundtable is set for 11:30 a.m. Oct. 18 at Kamal’s Kafe, 13091 Airline Highway, Gonzales.

Cost for the buffet-style lunch is $15.

The Roundtable is open to the public and guests are welcome.

Members and guests are asked to bring nonperishable canned goods for the club’s community service project. The club is collecting items for the St. Theresa Food Pantry.

Volunteers needed for Family Day

Volunteers are needed for the Girl Scouts Louisiana East Prairieville Service Unit 131 Scout Family Day on Oct. 20 at Duplessis Park on La. 621.

Organizers are in need of a nutritionist and presenters for Internet safety, first aid and finger painting.

The program will include activities; booths for health, safety and education; and prizes.

The event is open to the public, and the first 300 children will receive a treat bag.

All attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food item or toiletry item to assist Girl Scout Cadette Troop 10247 in its quest to replenish local food pantries emptied during Hurricane Isaac.

A donation of $3 per person will be collected for entry.

Council on Aging membership drive

The Ascension Council on Aging is holding its annual membership drive through Oct. 15.

Membership in the council is open to all adult parish residents. There is no fee for membership.

Anyone interested in the problems and concerns of the elderly can apply at 526 South Irma Blvd. in Gonzales and at 101 Bocage Drive in Donaldsonville.

The annual meeting of the Ascension Council on Aging will take place at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Gonzales Senior Center.

Fall fest, health fair set for Oct. 20

Ascension Baptist Church’s Fall Festival and Health Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 20 at the church, 13432 Airline Highway, in Gonzales.

The festival will include food, games, a jumbo slide, cupcake walk, football toss, petting zoo and other games and activities.

Organizers invite residents to pick up information on health-related issues and area services at the health fair.
