THURSDAY

  • Sign Time: 6 p.m., Ascension Parish Library, Dutchtown. A special Storytime presented with American Sign Language. Parents and their children will learn the signs for popular songs and rhymes such as "The More We Get Together," "Brown Bear" and "The Itsy Bitsy Spider." Stories will be interspersed with signs so you can learn a few words. While this program is open to children of all ages, it is designed for children ages 2 through 5. Space is limited and registration is required, so contact the library to register in advance. Call the library in Dutchtown at (225) 673-8699.

SUNDAY

  • Ascension Republican Women: 3 p.m., home of Diane and Louis Cosenza, Gonzales. The group is hosting a Membership Reception. Women interested in the organization and meeting and visiting with members and guests are invited to attend. Republican candidates and elected officials are also invited.   • Scarecrows Swamp Gonzales Contest: Oct. 1 to Oct. 31, exhibits at area businesses throughout Gonzales. Contest is part of the Awesome Art on the Bayou Festival, Oct. 13 and Oct. 14 held along the banks of Bayou Francois near city hall in Gonzales.

TUESDAY

  • RELIC: 6 p.m., Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales. "The American West in Fact and Fiction," part of the Readings in Literature and Culture series sponsored by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and funded by the library.
