Photographer named Artist of the Month

Photographer Josie Young was named the River Region Art Association’s July Artist of the Month.

Young’s photographs are on exhibit throughout the month at the River Region Art Gumbo Center on Magnolia Street in Gonzales and at the Houmas House Gift Shop.

Born in Munich, Germany, Young came to the United States in 1964.

“Josie was a late bloomer to the field of photography, taking up her camera only a few years ago as a hobby but it soon became more of a profession,” RRAA Vice President John Robbins said in a news release.

Today, she travels worldwide, bringing back hundreds of photos of far-away places.

Young specializes in nature photography, including snapshots of flowers, birds and sunsets. She also has a collection of architectural photographs from around the world.

She has won three first-place honors and numerous other awards in local competitions.

Young’s “The Blue Boat” photo was shot during a recent trip to Costa Rica.

“The bus was ready to leave a lagoon area when Josie slipped away to get just one more shot,” Robbins said. “Everyone was asking ‘Where’s Josie?’ and her friend was sure she was going to be left behind when Josie came hurrying up, camera in hand and a broad smile on her face.”

Young’s reward for her tardiness was a picture of an old, well-used blue skiff lying in the still water of the lagoon.

“The Blue Boat” can be seen hanging in River Region’s Houmas House Plantation and Gardens Gallery.
