Filmmaker Mire to speak in Gonzales
Award-winning documentary filmmaker Pat Mire will speak July 10 at a screening of “Against the Tide: The Story of the Cajun People of Louisiana” at Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales.
Mire, awarded the 2011 Acadian Culture Preservation Award in recognition of his “authentic and artistic portrayal of the Cajun people to the world through film,” will talk about the Acadian culture and history.
The documentary film tells the story of the Acadian people from their origins in France, immigration to Nova Scotia, expulsion by the British and their eventual relocation in South Louisiana. The film also looks at the battles to keep the Cajun culture alive and efforts to preserve the French language in Louisiana.
Ascension closings for July 4 holiday
All Ascension Parish governmental offices and departments will be closed Wednesday in observance of the Independence Day holiday, parish officials said.
Parish offices will reopen July 5 at their usual times.
KC pastalaya dinner fundraiser July 29
St. Theresa Knights of Columbus Council 2657 will be selling tickets for its July 29 pastalaya dinner fundraiser.
Tickets, which are $7, will be on sale after Masses at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Gonzales July 14, July 15, July 21 and July 22.
The lunches will be available for pickup at 11 a.m. on July 29 at St. Theresa Catholic School.
The fundraiser is to purchase medical testing equipment at the St. Elizabeth’s Community Clinic, which provides medical services to parish residents with low income and no medical insurance.
‘Legally Blonde’ stage tickets on sale
Tickets are on sale for Center Stage Performing Arts Academy’s summer production of “Legally Blonde The Musical.”
Performances will be held at the Manship Theatre in Baton Rouge at 7:30 p.m. on July 6-7, July 11-13 and July 18-20 and at 2 p.m. on July 8, July 14 and July 15.
