Woman convicted of using fake checks

A woman was convicted in New Orleans federal court of using counterfeit checks to buy a car and motorcycles, including from a dealership in Ascension Parish, prosecutors said.

Gina M. Seawright, 26, of Bay St. Louis, Miss., pleaded guilty Wednesday before U.S. District Judge Martin L.C. Feldman to making, uttering and possessing counterfeit securities between Dec. 3, and Jan. 20, prosecutors said.

With sentencing set Aug. 15, Seawright faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release, prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Orleans said in a news release.

According to a prosecutors, Seawright bought a black Suzuki motorcycle from Lightspeed Motorsports in Gonzales on Dec. 22 for $13,497. She defrauded other dealerships in Metairie, Kenner, Picayune, Miss., and Biloxi, Miss., prosecutors said.

She used a bogus Tennessee driver’s license and a counterfeit Regions Bank check to make the purchase.

Seawright produced fake checks on her computer at a motel in Gretna, the factual basis says, and sold some of the fraudulently purchased motorcycles for about $3,000 each.

last time i purchased a vehicle (and paid the balance with a check), the dealership contacted the bank to make sure the check was good before signing the truck over to me. i could use a new truck, what kind of truck dealerships gave her a vehicle without seeing if the money was there to back the check?
