Ceremonies to open parish skate park

The opening ceremony for the new Ascension Parish Skate Park on Irma Boulevard in Gonzales will be held at noon Saturday, said Lester Kenyon, public information officer for Ascension Parish government.

The skate park is next to the Gonzales Senior Center. The planned Feb. 4 grand opening was postponed due to inclement weather.

Skating enthusiast Branden Bennett said there will be skate competitions through 5 p.m. with prizes being awarded to the winners. He said live music and free jambalaya will also be provided.

Club, doctor to host glaucoma screening

The Gonzales Lions Club is joining with Dr. Eva Lamendola to offer free glaucoma screenings on Thursday at the Gonzales Walmart.

Lamendola said the screenings are designed for anyone at high risk of developing glaucoma, which she called a silent disease that can have no warning signs.

Anyone over the age of 60 is considered high risk, she said. However, people 40 and up are at risk for the disease and should have their eyes checked, she said.

The free screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Colonel’s wife to speak at event

Kristie Thomas, wife of retired U.S. Army Col. Ron Thomas, will speak at the Ascension GOP Roundtable on Feb. 16.

The Roundtable, sponsored by Ascension Republican Women, will also feature newly elected Ascension Parish Councilwoman Teri Casso.

The program starts at 11:30 a.m. with registration at Kamal’s Kafe, 13091 Airline Highway, Gonzales.

The cost for the buffet-style lunch is $13.

Guests are asked to donate a nonperishable food item to the group’s on-going community service project, which supports the St. Theresa Food Pantry.

Sign-up under way for Spring Fever fest

The River Region Art Association is accepting booth registration for its Spring Fever Arts and Community Festival to be held April 14-15 at the American Legion Post 81 Hall in Gonzales.

Booths for the festival, set from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will cost $75.

St. Amant reunion scheduled Aug. 18

The St. Amant High School class of 1987 is holding a reunion on Aug. 18 at the Grand Pavilion.

The cost of the event is $40.
