Acadiana crime blotter for Aug. 8, 2014

A former bookkeeper at a waste audit firm who helped herself to unauthorized raises, bonuses and expense account checks of over half a million dollars was sentenced to 29 months in federal prison.

U.S. District Judge Elizabeth Foote also ordered Bunnie Morris to pay restitution of $337,049.

Morris, 61, pleaded guilty in February to forging signatures of corporate officials at Waste Auditors Inc., a Lafayette company where Morris worked as a financial accountant and bookkeeper from 2001 until 2009, U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said.

Finley said Morris stole $579,050 during her time at Waste Auditors.

“Not only did she forge checks and expense account information, she orchestrated unauthorized payments to herself in the form of pay raises and bonuses,” Finley said in a news release.

Two teenagers arrested in vacant house fire

Lafayette police and fire officials arrested a juvenile and a 17-year-old male in the deliberately set fire Tuesday morning of a vacant house on Dolese Street.

Kavente Jenkins and a 13-year-old juvenile were booked Thursday on counts of simple arson in the fire that damaged the home at 204 Dolese, Lafayette Fire Department investigator Alton Trahan said.

Investigators do not believe the boys are linked to eight other arsons set in June, one of them also on Dolese Street, Trahan said.

Firefighters were called at 6:34 a.m. Tuesday to the 200 block of Dolese Street, where heavy smoke was billowing from one of the bedrooms of the vacant home.

No one was injured in the Tuesday fire or in the eight others in June.

Iota man dead in Acadia crash

A single-vehicle crash Wednesday night on La. 97 near Barwick Road in Acadia Parish killed one man and injured another man.

Both were transported to hospitals after being ejected from the Chevrolet truck during the crash shortly after 9:30 p.m. State Police Troop I investigators determined that 42-year-old Joseph Joseph II, of Iota, had been driving the truck south on La. 9 when the truck ran off the road to the right, Master Trooper Brooks David said.

The truck came back onto the road, swerving to the left, then overturned in a ditch, coming to rest on its roof, he said.

Joseph and passenger Eric Bergeaux, 34, of Basile, were not wearing seat belts. Joseph later died in a hospital, and Bergeaux remained in a hospital with moderate injuries Thursday, David said.

The crash remains under investigation, and toxicology results are pending to determine if the driver might have been impaired, David said.
