Acadiana Crime Blotter for July 29, 2014

A 60-year-old man is accused of setting a mobile home and a pickup truck on fire in Carencro, then firing at three people Sunday as the fire spread to a second dwelling, officials said.

Michael Delcambre, of Carencro, was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on two counts of simple arson and three counts of aggravated assault, said Chad Sonnier, fire chief of the Scott Volunteer Fire Department. Scott fire personnel and trucks along with Carencro’s responded to the 10 a.m. blaze Sunday.

Delcambre allegedly set the fire in the 100 block of Reynosa Road by lighting a T-shirt and putting it in a middle room in the mobile home, Sonnier said.

The suspect remains in jail on bail of $175,000, according to Sheriff’s Office records.

Living in the mobile home were Jennifer Veronie and Kenneth Cormier Jr., who escaped the fire but lost all their possessions, Sonnier said.

Clothing for the pair — both men’s and women’s large or extra large sizes — can be dropped off at the Carencro station on Lions Club Road in Scott.

Police probe robbery, attempted robbery

Lafayette police are looking into whether an armed robbery on Gloria Switch early Tuesday and an attempted robbery a short time later a few miles away are related.

Two men with handguns demanded money at 12:30 a.m. from a convenience store clerk on W. Gloria Switch Road, then fled with an unknown amount of cash, Lafayette Police Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a news release.

The robbery occurred at a Shell station in the 100 block of W. Gloria Switch, Mouton said.

No one was injured.

An employee described the assailants to police as two black men. One of them had a tan cloth wrapped around his head and wore a long-sleeve white T-shirt, light-gray sweat pants and white shoes, Mouton said.

The other covered his head with a white cloth and a baseball cap, and wore black pants and a red T-shirt with the numeral 1 printed on the back, he said.

About 40 minutes later, two men approached a Circle K store on Eraste Landry Road, took a look inside then fled.

Employees described the men as black, with one wearing a hooded sweatshirt and khaki shorts, and the other wearing dark pants and dark shirt.

“Witnesses stated they saw the suspects being dropped off by a white four-door vehicle shortly before the incident,” Mouton said.

Anyone with information may call the Lafayette Police Department or Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-TIPS.
