Lafayette crime blotter for April 26, 2014

A Lafayette police officer shot a gun-wielding man in the shoulder Thursday night during a disturbance on Clinton Street, police said.

The 19-year-old was taken into custody after the incident and is in stable condition at a local hospital. The Lafayette Police Department’s Officer Involved Shooting Team is investigating the incident.

The suspect will face criminal charges, said Lafayette Police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton, but he said police would not release his name or comment on possible charges until he is released from the hospital and officially booked into the Lafayette Parish jail.

The shooting occurred after police responded to a report of gunshots in the 200 block of East Clinton Street around 11:15 p.m. and saw a man standing in the street, according to police.

The man raised his gun toward the officer, who responded by firing several shots, striking him in the shoulder, police said.

He then ran away and was later found hiding under a house, Mouton said.

Investigators recovered two semi-automatic pistols from the scene and discovered the suspect was wanted on two warrants of resisting arrest and simple escape.
