Troopers identified him Wednesday morning as 54-year-old Bert Mabile of Belle Chase. Trooper 1st Class Stephen Hammons said troopers are still unsure why the driver ran off the interstate near milepost 75, which is about five miles west of Crowley. The man was traveling east at about 3:10 p.m. in his Chevrolet when he veered off the left side, overcorrected and ran off the right side of the interstate before hitting the embankment, Hammons said. The Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced the Mabile, who was wearing a seat belt, dead at the scene, Hammons said. It is unknown if impairment was a factor and the crash remains under investigation, Hammons said. Editor’s note: This story was changed on Wednesday, Jan. 22, to correct the date of the accident.
