Lafayette couple arrested in Ascension drug investigation

Ascension Parish sheriff’s narcotics detectives arrested a Lafayette couple on methamphetamine distribution and drug possession counts after an undercover operation earlier this week.

Detectives bought methamphetamine from Michael Musser, 32, and Theressa Cowart, 22, both of 300 Rubria St., Lafayette, in the parking lot of an unnamed Gonzales business on La. 44 on Tuesday, deputies said in a news release Wednesday.

Musser, who is Cowart’s boyfriend, served 12 years in Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola for an armed robbery conviction before being released in 2009, deputies said.

After brief chase, their vehicle was stopped and deputies found a loaded handgun in the waistband of Cowart’s underpants, deputies said. Detectives found a digital scale, methamphetamine, marijuana, Tramadol, Butalbital, Symax and Clonazepam in the vehicle, deputies said.

Musser and Cowart were each booked on counts of distribution of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, three counts of possession of a legend drug, possession of Schedule IV CDS and resisting an officer, deputies said.

Musser also was booked with a count of resisting by flight, while Cowart was booked with illegal carrying of a weapon, deputies said.

Musser and Cowart were awaiting their bail to be set in Ascension Parish Prison near Donaldsonville on Wednesday night, deputies said.
