Man suspected in Lafayette bank robbery, carjacking arrested in Mississippi

A man suspected in a Wednesday bank robbery and a Tuesday carjacking in Lafayette was taken into custody around midnight Thursday in Mississippi, police said.

Justin Reed Seawright, 31, of Lafayette, was being detained Friday on one count of armed robbery after agents with the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Task Force tracked him down at a motel in Bay St. Louis, according to a news release from the Lafayette Police Department.

Seawright had not been booked in the Lafayette Parish Correction Center as of Friday afternoon.

Seawright is accused of robbing the Whitney Bank in the 3600 block of Johnston Street on Wednesday.

Police said that when Seawright was apprehended late Thursday, he had a car that had been stolen at gunpoint on Tuesday on Ambassador Caffery Parkway.

Seawright had not been charged in the carjacking, but police said Friday they were in the process of obtaining a warrant on the charge.
