Two killed in three-vehicle crash on U.S. 90 near Scott

Two people were killed Thursday night in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 90 west of Scott, State Police reported.

Greg Picard, of Scott, was headed west on U.S. 90 in a Lincoln passenger car at 9:15 p.m. when he crossed the center line of the two-lane roadway and struck the rear of a eastbound Mercury SUV driven by Paul Francis, of Lafayette, causing Francis’ vehicle to overturn, according to a Troop I news release.

Picard’s car then hit head-on an eastbound Mitsubishi driven by Darleen Richard, of Lafayette.

Picard, 50, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafayette Parish coroner.

Richard, 55, who was restrained, also was pronounced dead at the scene.

Francis, 55, who wore a seat belt, was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. An unrestrained passenger in Francis’ SUV, Connie Celestine, 53, of Lafayette, was ejected and sustained moderate injuries.

It was unknown Friday morning whether driver impairment played a role in the crash, Troop I said.

Toxicology samples were submitted to the State Police Crime Lab in a case that remains under investigation.
