Around Acadiana for July 2, 2013

The Acadiana Symphony Orchestra is sponsoring a Fourth of July celebration at Parc International in downtown Lafayette from 5 p.m. until around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Featured performers are Mike & the Rockets, Corey Ledet & His Zydeco Band, Chubby Carrier and Lafayette’s Bayou Boys.

Attractions include interactive children’s music at Parc Sans Souci and a fireworks display that begins at 9:30 p.m., put on by Big, Better, BOOM! Fireworks.

Admission is $5 per person.

Sugar Mill Pond fireworks

Sugar Mill Pond will celebrate its annual Independence Day Celebration, with festivities starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sugar Mill Pond Town Center in Youngsville.

The event is free, open to the public and features face painting, pony rides, live music and hot-air balloon rides.

The finale is the 9 p.m. fireworks show.

For those who have never been to Sugar Mill Pond, the address is 101 Waterview Road, Youngsville.

Youth golf winners

Sheriff Mike Neustrom has announced the winners in his 13th annual golf tournament.

First-, second- and third -place 6- to 8-year-olds were Cooper Edney, Taylor Fitch and Carter Bower.

For 9- to 11-year-olds: Logan Lancaster, Colby Culotta and Tyler Barrilleaux.

For 12- to 14-year-olds: Branden Johnson, Matthew Weber and Grant Guidry.

For 15- to 17-year olds: Tanner Edney, Aaron Bird and Parker Guillot.

Arts organizations merge

The Performing Arts Society of Acadiana and Acadiana Center for the Arts announced Monday that their merger is now official with PASA moving into the Acadiana Center for the Arts’ downtown Lafayette office.

“We are going to accomplish a lot together,” Vicki Chrisman, PASA’s executive director, said in a news release.

The two organizations announced the planned merger in May, and it became official on Monday. Further information about the new organization can be obtained by calling (337) 237-ARTS.

‘Puppetry Arts’ classes

Eight days of learning the magic of puppetry start Monday at Cité des Arts, 109 Vine St. in Lafayette, with evening classes.

Cité des Arts and Hobgoblin Hill Puppets are sponsoring the classes, which run July 8-11 and July 15-18. Each day’s class starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m.

Alice Wallace, with Hobgoblin Hill Puppets, will conduct the classes. Hobgoblin Hills Puppets is a traveling troupe started by Wallace in 1987.

The cost is $200 per student, with teachers and students getting a $40 discount. For more information, go to

Parish trash pickup

Garbage and recycling collections will remain on schedule for the week in Lafayette Parish, including regular pickup on Thursday, the Fourth of July.

However, the Lafayette Consolidated Government compost facility at 400 Dugas Road will be closed Thursday and reopen Friday.
