LAFAYETTE — A teenager was killed and another injured after their four-wheeler was struck by a truck on La. 757 in Evangeline Parish early Sunday, State Police said.
Matthew Neal, a 15-year-old from Basile, died at a hospital before 1 p.m. Sunday, State Police Troop I said in a news release.
Neither Neal or his 16-year-old passenger, who sustained moderate injuries, was wearing a helmet when the crash occurred at 3:42 a.m.
Neal was operating the 2008 Honda all-terrain vehicle with no lights on La. 757 at Cut Across Road as a Ford F-150 driven by Jonathan Tucker, 21, of Eunice, came up on them from the rear.
“As Tucker approached the (all-terrain vehicle), he steered left in an attempt to avoid hitting it,” Troop I said. “For reasons still under investigation, Neal also steered left and Trucker struck Neal’s ATV from behind.”
The investigation is ongoing, the new release says, and investigators are awaiting toxicology results from the State Police Crime Lab in Baton Rouge.
