Cajun and Creole guitarists will demonstrate techniques and discuss their roles in bands playing South Louisiana music from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Vermillionville Performance Center.

Christine Balfa, Randy Vidrine and Lil Buck Sinegal will be among the guitarists demonstrating their skills. They also will discuss the history of the guitar in the genre, which often maintained a band’s rhythm before drums became part of the sound.

The event is part of “The Backyard Series,” which is free and for all ages and sponsored by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Center for Louisiana Studies.

Wine-tasting fundraiser

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana will host a wine tasting to raise money for the organization, which helps at-risk children.

The Third annual BACCHANALIAN will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday in the Abacus Ballroom, 530 W. Pinhook Road, Lafayette.

Three-person wine-tasting “teams” can attend for $225, or $75 per person, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go toward funding the organization that offers support and guidance to youths.

Entertainment will be provided by “Major Handy.”

Wine samples will be provided for every team, along with ballots to rate favorites. Food will be provided.

Sponsorships are still available, and teams are being signed up.

Series focuses on garden

A food-growing, harvesting and preparation series held every three months at Vermilionville will hold its second session of the year with a garden expert’s emphasis on vegetables.

The session is part of a quarterly series, “Seed to Skillet,” and begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, when Greg Guidroz provides a lesson on how to plant, care for and gather crops from home gardens to help feed the family.

Guidroz will concentrate on tomatoes, okra, corn, beans, early peppers and figs.

Guidroz will demonstrate how to prepare fig preserves, salsa and corn maque choux.

Guidroz also will talk about when and where to apply fertilizer, provide tips on getting rid of garden pests with organic materials, and also show how to create a fall crop list.

Guidroz will appear again on Sept. 28 for lessons in growing and preserving peppers and preserves. That session will include lessons for peppers, beans, collard greens, winter squash, sweet potatoes and muscadine. The cooking demonstration will involve making muscadine jelly, beans and collard greens with rice.

On Dec. 21, Guidroz’s demonstration will cover planting and harvesting nuts and berries.
