Acadiana teachers selected for math education program

Fourteen math teachers from Iberia, Lafayette and Vermilion parishes were selected for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s “Louisiana Mathematics Masters in the Middle,” a professional development program.

The university received a $1.8 million grant from the National Science Foundation to provide professional development for teachers to foster student interest in the subject.

Teachers will receive a $10,000 annual stipend in the four-year program and take graduate courses toward certification as an elementary mathematics specialist.

As part of the program, the teachers also will create professional learning communities within their own schools, mentor UL-Lafayette education majors and lead an intensive summer enrichment program for middle school students beginning in 2014.

Teachers selected are:

Iberia Parish: Katie Boudreaux, Elizabeth Grossie, and Wanda Milliman.

Lafayette Parish: Josie Abington, Angela Boxie, Lerri Cockrell, Corissa Guidry, Erin Landry, Nicole Melancon, Heather Olsen, and Lisa Suddoth.

Vermilion Parish: Shana Broussard, Natalie G. Davis, and Traci Simon.
