African diaspora talk Wednesday
LAFAYETTE — Slavery, freedom and the cultural significance of the African diaspora will be discussed during a presentation at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Ibrahima Seck, a Sénégalese scholar, professor and author, will speak in the Ernest J. Gaines Center on the third floor of the Edith Garland Dupré Library.
Seck, acting director of the Whitney Plantation Museum, is working on a book about the history of the site, “Habitation Haydel: The Antebellum History of Whitney Plantation of St. John the Baptist Parish.”
The event is sponsored by the UL-Lafayette Department of History and funded by the Guilbeau Charitable Trust.
Superintendent’s golf tourney slated
LAFAYETTE — The Lafayette Parish school system’s 16th annual Superintendent’s Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held Monday at the Farm d’Allie Golf Club, 1235 Beau Bassin Road, Carencro.
Lunch and registration begins at 11 a.m. and tee time is at noon.
Individual registration is $125. Sponsorships and opportunities for food and refreshment vendors are available.
The tournament funds college scholarships for seniors graduating from the parish’s six public high schools.

Standardized test applications ready
LAFAYETTE — Applications for state standardized testing are available for home school and nonpublic school students who are interested in enrolling in Lafayette Parish public schools next year.
Students in fourth and eighth grade are required to take the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program or LEAP test.
The iLEAP tests, given to students in third, fifth, sixth and seventh grades, will also be administered to students in home school or in-home private programs. Students in nonpublic schools are ineligible for iLEAP testing.
The registration deadline for both tests is March 8.
The first phase of the LEAP exam will be March 19 with makeup dates March 21-22, and the second phase will be April 8-11 with makeup dates on April 12-17.

SLCC ‘mini-mester’ registration set
LAFAYETTE — The last day to register for South Louisiana Community College’s six-week, “mini-mester” is March 20.
The abbreviated semester begins March 18 and ends April 29.
Classes are offered in a number of disciplines including English, general business, educational psychology, algebra, biology, and music. Students can find courses and register by selecting the “Class Schedule Search” tab within their LoLA accounts.
Advisers and other student services personnel are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and can be contacted at (337) 521-8923.
Campuses are in Lafayette, New Iberia, St. Martinville, Crowley, Ville Platte, Abbeville, Opelousas and Franklin.
