Woman booked
in daughter’s death

A Church Point woman whose daughter was killed when the child ran across U.S. 190 last month has been arrested, State Police Troop I reported.

Stephanie Fontenot, 37, was booked into the St. Landry Parish jail on one count of child endangerment, said Stephen Hammons, public information officer with Troop I.

Fontenot’s daughter, 7-year-old Kendessa Castile, was killed Jan. 29 when she darted across U.S. 190 in an area east of La. 753, between Opelousas and Eunice, police said.

State Police said in January that the accident occurred at 7:18 p.m. when two westbound vehicles hit and killed Kendessa as she tried to cross highway.

Fontenot was booked into jail on Friday. Hammons on Tuesday did not have information on Fontenot’s bond amount.

Coroner identifies drowning victim

The Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office has identified the man who was killed Sunday when he overturned his vehicle in a canal at South Lewis Street and Ernest Crochet Road.

Dr. Carl M. Ditch, Iberia Parish coroner, said Mark Anthony Letner, of Plaquemine, drowned.

Letner, 27, was found in the submerged vehicle near a railroad bridge after deputies responded to the crash at 11:50 a.m. Sunday, Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Capt. Ryan P. Turner said in a release.

Letner was pronounced dead at the scene, Turner said.

Sheriff’s officials believe Letner was the driver of the vehicle, the release stated.
