Pilot dies when helicopter crashes while crop-dusting

An experienced pilot died Sunday morning when his Bell 47 helicopter carrying crop-dusting materials crashed in a sugar cane field near U.S. 90 and Hubertville Road near Jeanerette, the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Kenneth E. Squires, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office, said Lt. Jeremy Kelley, of the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.

“Mr. Squires was a longtime pilot and had been involved in agricultural crop-dusting for more than three decades,” Kelley said.

The crash occurred about 10:20 a.m.

“As of this time, the cause of the crash is still under investigation,” Kelley said.

Two members of the Federal Aviation Administration arrived to conduct a preliminary investigation, he said. Officials with the National Traffic Safety Board, who investigate all air crashes, are also expected.
